I hate running. I am not not a runner. I have respect for those that like to run. But it is not for me. In Arnold's Pump Club, Arnold challenged us to "get out of our comfort zone." Do something different. Challenge ourselves. So I decided to run in my first Arnold Classic 5K at 54 years old. I have arthritis in my left knee and it is bone on bone. So pain and pounding deeply concerned me.
Are you thinking about running? Here are my some tips for running in your first Arnold Classic 5K
First, I am very happy to have run the race. I accomplished a goal. Just do it. You do not have to run. In fact, I walked most of the way.
How long is it?
It is about 10,000 steps.
How long did it take you?
It took me 49 minutes. You will finish it in about one hour if you walk it. The first place finisher completed it in 15 minutes!!
What do I wear?
It depends on the weather. You definitely do not want to wear heavy clothes. I wore a hoodie and track pants. It was enough on a very cold day. So if it is warmer, I wouldn't wear a hoodie. For those that can actually run, you should wear something lighter.
How is the course?
There was a hill at the beginning and at the end that got a lot of people. The last hill is the tough one.
What is the Pump and Run?
If you do a bench press, you can get seconds deducted from your time. If you are competitive and looking to do compete, then go for it. For the average person, it really doesn't matter.
Can my kids join?
Absolutely! The most depressing moment was watching a 5 year old speed by me. That made me feel old. I saw people running with the kids in a baby carriage. Parents and Grandparents together. It was great.
How much was it?
Check the website but I paid about $50 for the run and I got a free entry pass to the Arnold Classic Expo.
Can I Meet Arnold?
Yes! He is at the front of the race doing the countdown. He will even give you a fist punch.
